Mistral Large 4 "Le Chonk": Europe Ships a Trillion-Parameter Open Model

Some companies name their flagship AI models after constellations, Greek gods, or vaguely aspirational nouns. Mistral named theirs after an internet meme about fat cats. And honestly? When your model has a trillion parameters, "Le Chonk" might be the most accurate name in the whole industry.

One Trillion Parameters, Made in Europe

On October 6 at AI Everything Abu Dhabi, Mistral AI CEO Arthur Mensch introduced Mistral Large 4, a natively multimodal Mixture of Experts model with 1 trillion total parameters and about 49 billion active per token. It was trained from scratch on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell chips in Mistral's own European datacenters, and its training data covers more than 160 languages, including every official EU language.

A public preview is live now through Mistral's platform, and open weights are scheduled for later this month. Mistral says it's aimed at coding, agentic workflows, multimodal analysis, and enterprise work in fields like cybersecurity, finance, and law. Per SiliconANGLE, it scored 82% on the AA Cyber Index for patching open-source projects, which puts it in the top five. It still trails frontier models on coding but beats Qwen3.8 Max and DeepSeek V4 Pro there.

The Open-Weight Plot Twist

For the past couple of years, the best open-weight models have mostly come from Chinese labs. A European trillion-parameter model with downloadable weights changes that. It gives businesses a serious open option trained on European soil, which matters a lot to anyone whose legal team breaks into hives at the words "data residency."

Here's the part that gets lost in the benchmark chatter: open weights don't mean you can run it on your laptop. Even with only ~49B parameters active per token, the full model is a beast, and actually deploying it is real infrastructure work. For most businesses, the win is optionality: you can prototype on the hosted API today and keep the option to self-host later if compliance, cost, or vendor-lock nerves ever demand it. Mistral also says bigger versions and use-case-tuned spinoffs are coming within months, so this is a platform, not a one-off.

Le Chonk is big, open, and European. Turns out you really can have your croissant and eat it too.
